Turning the Tide is a social change movement
It is a way of acknowledging and celebrating the great work happening in the Hutt to create healthier places to live, learn, work and play while inspiring others to also take action.
And we need to take action, the future demands it. Lower Hutt has some of our country’s worst statistics for obesity and preventable chronic disease. It doesn’t have to be this way. It is up to all of us to take action to create environments that make the healthy choice the easy and normal choice.
If we all do our part we will make a big difference not just for ourselves but for future generations, our tamariki deserve it.
The idea behind Te kawe kē i te ihu o te waka (Turning the Tide) started within Healthy Families Lower Hutt as a way of inspiring the whole of the Hutt to see that together we can turn the tide on our collective health. By acknowledging and celebrating the small (or big) changes we make to create healthier places to live, learn, work and play we can encourage others to take action.
Turning the Tide has evolved from that first idea through many conversations, workshops and collaborations. It has developed from within the Hutt community and belongs to that community. It is for all of us to use to create the social movement we need to make a real difference.
Healthy Families Lower Hutt will be the main support behind Turning the Tide during the early stages.
Healthy Families Lower Hutt
Healthy Families Lower Hutt is a dedicated prevention workforce that works with local leaders, groups and organisations across many different sectors, supporting them in their ideas and initiatives to create healthier environments where we live, learn, work and play.
Our aim is to make good health easier and more accessible by promoting healthy food options, smokefree areas, physical activity and reducing alcohol-related harm in places like sports clubs, schools, food outlets, workplaces, parks, marae and other places where we spend our time.
Healthy Families Lower Hutt is one of 10 chosen communities around the country that are part of Healthy Families NZ, the Government’s flagship prevention platform – a key part of the Government’s wider approach to helping New Zealanders live healthy, active lives.
